Summer Kayak Instructor Position

We are looking for 2 NCCP certified kayak instructors in the Spring of 2024, to provide kayak instruction for school programs and spring camps as well as recreational programs for adult and youth club members. The majority of programming is provided at Cultus Lake, with whitewater kayak instruction to be provided on the Chilliwack River. Instructors will be supervised and mentored by our Head Coach. These positions will be subsidized by the Canada Summer Jobs Program, therefore, candidates must be under 30 years old.

Working Conditions:

The successful candidates will be hired as seasonal employees. There are TWO positions available:

1. Two instructors full time (30-35 hours/ week) for 8 weeks primarily responsible for running school groups.

Start date May 1.

For all positions, the salaried pay rate will be $18-$22/ hour depending on level of certification and experience.

Employment Requirements

The Kayak Instructor must have the following qualifications,

1. NCCP Kayak Instructor or lake kayak instructor course (I2L2 level preferred)

2. First Aid with CPR (Advanced Wilderness first aid preferred)

3. Respect in Sport, Safe Sport, Making Ethical Decisions, or equivalent online training

4. Swiftwater Safety Awareness (Swiftwater Safety Rescue level 2-4 preferred)

If needed the CCE will provide assistance with training, including a contribution to the cost of training up to a

maximum of $600. The candidate must provide two work references, and prior to the start date must provide a

Criminal Record Check and ICBC driver’s abstract

The ideal candidate will be comfortable kayaking on whitewater up to grade 3, he/she will have experience working with youth aged 8 years and older, experience working as a summer camp facilitator or instructor and/or with youth sports programming. Candidates must enjoy working with youth, be capable of working independently with their co-instructor, with minimal direct supervision, and should have excellent client communication skills. At least one of the instructors hired should have a road-worthy vehicle capable of pulling a small boat trailer (mileage allowance provided).

The Kayak Instructor must be versed in Canoe Kayak BC and Canoe Kayak Canada safety protocols and must adhere to these requirements at all times. All youth lessons and camps will be scheduled with a minimum of two instructors to meet “Rule of Two” Safe Sport requirements.
