KAYAKING LESSONS

CKC CANOE KAYAK PROGRAM

Our kayaking programs are based on the Canoe Kayak Canada curriculum and this curriculum has been implemented into all of our programming. Our programs consist of 9 levels:

Flatwater

Level 1: These classes will embrace all beginners. Learn how to get in and out of a boat, launch independently, balance on the water, properly hold a paddle, reverse and forward sweep to pivot, stop, wet exit without a spraydeck, and paddle backwards. No prerequisites.

Level 2: These classes are for the learner who is ready to continue building their paddling foundation. Learn how to select a kayak and paddle that fits you, dry and wet exit with a spraydeck, forward and reverse paddle in a straight line, hold your tilted boat on its edge, draw to bow/stern while pivoting 360° and use safety river signals. Prerequisite: Level 1

Level 3: This learner is ready to complete their paddling foundation on flatwater. Learn how to redirect your boat, change edges, move your boat sideways, weave through obstacles, high and low brace, roll, and perform a T-rescue. For the learners who are stable enough, we will introduce them to a slalom boat. Prerequisite: Level 2.

Whitewater

Level 4: These classes are for the learner who is ready to advance to gently moving water. Learn how to identify currents, eddies, and eddy lines and how to turn in and out of eddies, cross and spin in   a current, wet exit in the river, and defensively swim. Prerequisite: Level 3.

Level 5: With developing skill and proficiency, this learner will learn to link eddy and S-turns, ferry across eddy lines, paddle through medium waves and holes, over ledges and submerged rocks. Learn how to roll in a river, and further understand how to read the water and hazards of a river. Prerequisite: Level 4.

Level 6: This learner focuses on their paddling posture, torso rotation, balance, edge control, timing and stroke mechanics. Learn how to jet ferry across a diagonal wave, front surf, move back and forth while surfing a hole, paddle through large waves, boof edges, and roll in a current. Prerequisite: Level 5.
